SOME OF OUR BELIEFS
|
- We uphold our Jewish heritage of Torah, its traditions and its values.
- We believe that to ensure that Judaism is relevant and valid, we must continue to develop it for the modern world.
- We believe that each Jew in each generation has the duty to pass on their heritage enriched by their own thoughts and actions.
- We believe that Judaism does not require the abdication of the mind; but that reason, thought and prayer can help us to understand what God wants of us.
- We do not believe that religion and science are in conflict. We see science as describing God's creation of the world and how God continues to direct its progress through evolution. And we see religion as guiding scientists about the ethical way to use their new discoveries.
- We feel ourselves as part of the community of the Children of Israel with all the duties and responsibilities that this entails.
- We believe that we Jews are part of the wider human race and have to live in this world and not apart from it.
- We also believe that our ancient teachings and values are also of great importance to the gentile world, and could help to enrich our society and, if applied, could bring them justice, happiness and peace.
- We believe that the commandments concerning moral and ethical behaviour are just as important as those for ritual observance.
- We believe that men and women should play an equal part within religion and should be treated equally.
- We have faith in a better future, and believe that if all people would only follow God's teachings, then together we could create a world of justice, freedom, brotherhood and peace.
